Join us for Introduction to Inlay Camp! This one-and-a-half-day course will immerse you in the intricate and captivating world of inlay. This class is designed to give you a foundational understanding and application of this beautiful art form, setting the stage for further exploration and mastery. This beginner-level camp will feature the following:
A Brief History of Inlay Art
Inlay art has a rich and storied past that spans centuries and cultures. From ancient Mesopotamia to Renaissance Italy, artisans have used inlay techniques to create stunning decorative pieces. The method involves embedding different materials into a base object, resulting in intricate patterns and designs that are both visually and tactilely pleasing.
Materials and Tools
During the class, you will become familiar with the various materials commonly used in inlay work. These include woods of different grains and colors, metals, mother-of-pearl, and even precious stones. You’ll also learn about the essential tools required for inlay work, such as chisels, gouges, and precision cutting instruments. Each tool and material has its own unique properties and uses, which you will explore hands-on.

This introductory class is the perfect lead-in to our more advanced inlay courses. As you gain confidence and skill, you’ll be ready to tackle more complex projects and refine your craft further.

Camp Details and More
All of our camps take place at the Foster Mandolin & Guitar Co. Shop, located at 3045 Henley Way in Spring Hill, TN, near Nashville. Breakfast, snacks, and lunch are included. Currently, lodging is not included. However, we are happy to provide information about nearby hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and much more upon request.
After making the downpayment (or full payment when applicable), you will receive more class details, as well as a questionnaire that will provide us with more details about you and your camp project.

About the Instructor
A musician since childhood and dentist by profession, Dr. David Foster has always had a natural talent and passion for working with his hands. David combined this with more than 30 years of woodworking experience to launch his lifelong dream and labor of love – Foster Mandolin & Guitar Co. – in 2020.
He has since launched Doozy, a line of instruments using Tennessee-sourced materials, and continues to deal in vintage instruments and parts – a hobby he adopted more than 35 years ago.
Most recently, David introduced the Foster Mandolin & Guitar Co. Camps, which offers inlay, banjo and mandolin assembly courses, and more. By providing comprehensive training, he hopes the academy will help nurture a new generation of talented instrument makers, preserving the art of creating these intricate and valuable objects.
